I would keep your holiday plans to yourself unless you are 100% sure you will be taking time off, have plane tickets in hand, and know exactly how many days etc. It's remarkable how fast your conversation with them will end when you disclose any whiff of your time off information.

Just keep in mind though, some agencies may blacklist you if you leave the project too early. Many will rehire you back if they have a pressing need however.

I have this very dilemma right now. I had planned to take 2+ weeks off during the holidays--a trip to see my family that means a lot to me. However, I really need the money and all the contract projects specify that they want 1 month or more commitment and no extensive time off over the holidays. I'm not sure what to say in interviews--that my plans aren't set (which they aren't)? That I will give them 1 (or 2) weeks notice but otherwise make no promises? But that could cost me a job I really need. I'd rather not straight-up lie, not only for ethical reasons but because I don't wan to burn employers.

Suggestions?

Sounds like a good plan! I was hoping that your previous entry about working through the holidays was going to change. I agree with you. In my experience (going on two+ years), I find that keeping that information close the vest is for the best.
